Interview to / Entrevista a 👩‍💻 Kerry / Folerdetdufoler (2019, Writer+Escritora,Isak+Even)

Your welcome to my blog “De nuevo alzo mi voz”, I’m delighted to be able to interview you (2019). I'm sorry, sorry, sorry.

Pido mil perdones.

ENTREVISTA DE 2019
INTERVIEW (2019)

Mayu 👩‍🌾 Who is Folerdetdufoler and what's the history behind that nickname?

👩‍🎨 Hello! I am Kerry, a 28-year-old woman (2019) who lives near New York City. “Folerdetdufoler” is a phrase that I picked up from my favorite tv show, SKAM. The show titles all of their individual clips, and when it first aired, one of the clips was titled “Føler det du føler,” which translates to “feel what you feel.” It’s my favorite clip from the whole series, as well as an important message from the characters in the scene, and I loved it so much that I used it to start my tumblr account where I would blog about the show and follow other fans. I used it as I started other accounts (twitter, instagram, and ao3) and depending on the platform I’m more recognizable as “folerdetdufoler” than Kerry.

Hola.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 You were born in EEUU. What were your childhood and teenage years like?
Naciste en Estados Unidos. ¿Cómo fue tu infancia y adolescencia?

👩‍🎨 My childhood was quiet. My family kept me and my siblings active with various afterschool activities, and I grew up playing soccer, baseball, and tennis, and learning cello and ballet. When I was 12 I got very sick, fell into a coma, and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Six months later I was put on an insulin pump, and I’ve been using one ever since. We didn’t have TV when we were younger, so we read books a lot. I generally enjoyed the academic part of school, and I went to university for an English degree.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 Personally, i'm very close to my family. Do you also share a special bond with yours?

👩‍🎨 I don’t think I do, actually! I am closest with my sister, but we are not a very emotional family, so I don’t think we connected much on that level growing up. I love them, and we all support each other, but we only gather together for holidays and the occasional birthday, and catch up with each other’s lives a few times a year.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 How did you discover/find out that you liked writing and how old were you when you started to write?
¿Cómo descubriste que te gustaba escribir y cuándo comenzaste a hacerlo?

👩‍🎨 If you ask my mother, she’ll say I was very young when I started telling stories, entertaining myself while I played with dolls and toys, and that was happening before I knew how to write. I didn’t do much creative writing in school, but I liked learning how to write different styles, and took some creative writing courses in university. After university I wrote a lot for my job, but it was mostly marketing copy. I didn’t start writing and posting stories (Ao3) until early 2017 when I began writing SKAM fanfic.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 When did you feel that you wanted to earn your living as an writer?

👩‍🎨 Maybe about six months ago. I’ve been bouncing a few original stories & characters around in my head, now that I’ve gained some confidence about my own writing from the positive feedback I’ve received from my fanfic. I have yet to actually make any moves toward that goal though!

Mayu 👩‍🌾 How would you describe your first writings? (And the ones you do now?)

👩‍🎨 Probably straightforward and realistic, both when I was younger and now. I like describing things as accurately as possible, not really caring for the beauty of a sentence. I want something to make sense in my mind as well as the reader’s, so I try to include necessary details yet still leave room for your imagination to fill in the gaps so it will be a vivid creation of your own.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 What is the most difficult thing to writing? And the easiest? What is what you most enjoy writing?

👩‍🎨 It depends on my mood! Usually I find sex scenes most difficult to write because being descriptive in those scenes is a very delicate process. Most of the time I put them off until the end of the chapter because I’m avoiding the amount of work it takes. The easiest part might be the jokes or the banter, because they’re usually based in word play and are inspired by things I encounter in my daily life (unlike male homosexual sex). I’ll think of something funny and then work backward, trying to fit a clever conversation into a bigger scene that will actually help move the story forward. I enjoy it the most when it flows easily, when I can type without stopping, but that rarely happens.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 Where does your inspiration come from?
¿Dónde encuentras tu inspiración?

👩‍🎨 I’m mostly inspired by SKAM, their characters, and the city of Oslo. The actual stories are prompted by other people in the fandom, and sometimes the comments I receive on a work-in-progress shape how I write the story. I’m not sure if it’s inspiration or just motivation, but I write to record the fantasy world that I keep running through my mind, as well as to create additional content for other SKAM fans. I like to keep Isak and Even alive, and hopefully introduce them to new fans even though the show is over.

A mi me gusta mantener vivos a Isak y Even, y ojalá pueda presentárselo a nuevos fans aunque la serie haya acabado.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 I know you are in love with Isak and Even, too with Tarjei and Henrik. What does the actors and the characters mean to you and how is it reflected in your art?

👩‍🎨 I’m grateful for the characters that Tarjei and Henrik brought to life in Isak and Even. They both have striking personalities and features that I enjoy watching and figuring out how to write about. For a while during the show and after it ended, I tried to follow Tarjei and Henrik’s work through interviews and social media, but as they’ve expanded into different roles I’ve found myself moving back toward just understanding them as Isak and Even. Especially since that is who I’m writing about! I’m glad that they are physical human beings (versus some sort of illustrated character) because it helps me shape their characters when I can rely on describing recognizable expressions. Part of the reason why I rewatch bits of the show is so I can see how they raise their eyebrows or cross their legs or hold their phones, and those are the details that are easiest to visualize by other fans when they’re reading.

Even after all these years I’m still a bit ashamed of being such an aggressive fan of the show, so I much prefer being anonymous in that aspect. I’m not interested in meeting the actors, and it makes me nervous to think they could see/read the things that I post. What I’m creating is for other fans, people like me, not the ones involved in the original creation. I don’t want them to see how I’m interpreting their work, so I like to participate in fandom only to the extent that Julie/Tarjei/Henrik/etc. do not get offended by it. I think boundaries are pretty important between artists and fans, and I am a fan, not an artist.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 How do you feel when you get immersed in each of them and how has it changed your mind?

👩‍🎨 I definitely use brainstorming these alternative universes or headcanons as a fantasy, an escape! It’s nice to believe in a world where you can be loved and where you know how to (or at least learn to) love someone else. I like watching it happen over and over again in the clips, and then I like trying to extend it into different scenes in my head. I sort of try to...make a bridge, craft these realistic scenes out of my own life, and funnel Isak and Even’s love into it, so I can see how possible it is in my world too. I escape into this kind of exercise, but I think it also keeps me motivated. It gives me insight into how I should deal with my own problems, by seeing these characters struggle with similar ones, and I hope I’m developing some steps toward emotional maturity through my writing.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 Do you think about the universe parallel of Isak and Even? And the others remakes of Skam and the others Isak y Even?

👩‍🎨 I do think about it, sometimes. Sometimes I think about how I don’t truly understand what Isak was talking about, and other times I swear by the theory, because of its strength and romance and perspective. What trips me up, most of the time, is the idea of infinite parallel universes, because in Isak’s example, he suggests that the curtains are a different color. But what I don’t know is the extent of those changes. How many things can change in each universe while still being able to call these two guys Isak and Even? Maybe the little things, like curtains, don’t have any effect on Isak and Even meeting and falling in love, but what if you change schools, or cities, or countries? What if you change the structure of their families? What if you change Even’s mental illness? At what point are they no longer Isak and Even, and thus would they not fall in love with each other? I believe Isak and Even will always fall in love. That’s what I write in my stories. I do not think I’m writing parallel universes, even though I’m writing alternative universes. I’m choosing different changes, so as much as I’d like to think I’m writing parallel universes, I’m simply changing the characters to fit Isak & Even’s love into whatever universe I’d like.

I think the remakes are doing the same thing. They’re writing completely new characters! They have their own names and their own stories. They certainly seem similar to Isak and Even’s, because they move on similar developmental paths, but it’s different characters just following Isak and Even’s footsteps. They’re copying certain things and stepping away on others, and actually...that means they’re in Isak and Even’s universe. They’re not parallel or alternative. They are following, a couple of years behind. They would not exist if Isak and Even didn’t exist, so the remakes are actually not proof of Isak’s theory on parallel universes.

WTFOCK

DRUCK

SKAM ESPAÑA / SPAIN

SKAM FRANCIA / FRANCE

SKAM ITALIA

And now my brain hurts. But I like the parallel universes theory as it exists as something Isak and Even bonded over early on in their relationship and something that became a touchstone for their love. If they believe in that theory, then they believe that the people they are, every detail about them, is loved by someone else. If in every parallel universe they are lying in bed together, then that is proof that for every change that is made, Isak still loves Even. He loves Even when he knows about his bipolar disorder, and he loves Even when he doesn’t know about his bipolar disorder. And Even loves Isak whether he is ashamed of his sexuality or whether he is proud of it. And that belief, that assures them that they can make decisions and changes in their lives and that love will still be there no matter what. Even can tell him about his struggles with his mental illness, and Isak will always be lying next to him in bed, listening to him. Isak can kiss Even in public, be proud of how he is attracted to another man, and Even will always kiss him back and stand up next to him to defend his attraction when someone tries to insult them from across the street. So I don’t think the theory applies to reality or to the remakes, but it belongs to Isak and Even as a way to understand and express their love.

Mayu 👩‍🌾 What are your major influences...?
¿Cuáles son tus mayores influencias?

👩‍🎨 Nothing has influenced me as much as SKAM, and it’s difficult to find anything else to recommend! I enjoy realistic stories and realistic storytelling, because I like to be able to understand something in the context of my own life. I mostly read contemporary fiction (adult and YA), and am drawn to stories that involve a character’s sexuality in some way, because it gives me another perspective on my own, which is still developing. I’m also interested in stories about people with disabilities, because i think I have a lot to learn from how they define themselves and survive in an ableist world.

I’m very excited to start watching Special, a new show on Netflix, about a gay man with cerebral palsy, based on and starring Ryan O’Connell. I’m going to read his memoir soon!

Anyway, back to realism: I enjoy most of the fanart that the SKAM fandom has created, but I love the photo-realistic depictions the most! I bought this piece from Melissa:

I also like seeing the different scenes that Ayesha / Art Vandeley draws! Her depiction of Isak and Even in their russ overalls is one of my favorites, and matched how I pictured Isak in Knock Four Times.

Outside of SKAM, I don’t have any single hero/heroines, or single piece of art/media that I let influence me. I just try to find a good balance between things that comfort me and things that open me up to new perspectives. I think it’s important to have a lot of variety in your life so you can better understand how other people experience the world and thus what your own place is, in it. Sometimes I regret how much influence I let SKAM have over my life, but overall it was a positive experience that let me grow and learn, and I’ve had the luxury of finding something I’m passionate about and pursuing it completely. But I look forward to finding new things, having different conversations, appreciate the power, intelligence, and creativity in fandom communities, and raising the bar for the stories we tell to each other.

I think Julie Andem and her partnership with NRK created a revolutionary storytelling format using tools that are already embedded in our daily lives. I’m inspired by how they could take a very basic love story, a classic, really, and shape it just so that it is both familiar and shocking, and seamlessly reflects our own lives will also taking command of it without us realizing. Love is love, but it all depends on how you tell it.
